MasterCraft Racing’s Robbie Pierce and Rob MacCachren Double Down at the 2012 Laughlin Desert Challenge

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

It has been said, “a journey is measured in friends and not in miles.”  For anyone who races, it can be measured in both and this has certainly been the case for MasterCraft Racing’s Robbie Pierce and Rob MacCachren.  What began as a serendipitous venture at SCORE’s 2009 Primm 300 race has evolved into a top-level racing partnership that, like anything worth doing, has solidified the respect and friendship of two teammates and had it’s share of victories, losses, heartbreaks and truly gratifying moments.

While Rob MacCachren, Robbie Pierce, and the support crew have had some incredible successes over the previous two years, the drivers and the crew still haven’t quite accomplished everything they set out to do as a team.  “We came close to getting Rob Mac the SCORE Championship last year and me my first Trophy Truck win, but we couldn’t quite pull it off.  I guess we are just going to have to try again this year!” said team owner and driver of the No. 30 SCORE Trophy Truck, Robbie Pierce.

scaled_e1326074506

For a third consecutive year, Robbie Pierce and Rob MacCachren are teaming up and campaigning two premier Jimco-built SCORE Trophy Trucks in the 2012 SCORE International Desert Racing Series.  The trucks will be campaigned under the MasterCraft Racing banner with Robbie Pierce’s No. 30 truck wearing the Impact / BFGoodrich / Fox Shox livery and Rob MacCachren’s No. 20 truck will be decked out in the familiar Rockstar Energy Drink / BFGoodrich Tires / MasterCraft Safety regalia.

“It truly has been an honor to race with Rob MacCachren,” said Robbie Pierce.  “The first year we had a lot to learn but last year the team really found its groove.  The crew is organized, the pits were efficient and well orchestrated and we really came together as a team.  As long as we continue to build upon that foundation I think we will get what we are after this year.”

Most teams and drivers would be happy with a 2011 season that found them claiming the overall victory at not one, but two San Felipe desert races, finishing second in points in the SCORE Trophy Truck class, earning the Toyota Milestone Award for completing all 1762.02 race miles during the year, and being one of only two individuals inducted into the 2011 Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame.  Most drivers aren’t Rob MacCachren though.  With a combined desert and short-course off-road racing career that boasts an astonishing 189 victories and 20 series championships, there is no doubt Rob Mac sets the bar high personally and also for the team.

The first event for both Robbie Pierce and Rob MacCachren will be the 18th Annual SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge held January 13 – 15, 2012 in Laughlin, Nevada.  Drawing the second starting position for qualifying, Pierce will put on his Impact driving suit and helmet and strap into his MasterCraft Safety 3G seat and restraints at 2pm PST January 13th in hopes of claiming a favorable starting position for Saturday’s competition while teammate, Rob Mac, will be qualifying seventh in a solo lap over the 6.25 mile course.  This year’s competition is two separate races which doubles the stakes and sets the stage for the SCORE points championship as the season heads into the 26th Annual MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March.

The SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge course features eight 6.25 miles loops that have been described as nothing less than merciless and unforgiving.  “Its like doing the first 20 miles of San Felipe, twice, at a full sprint – except the ‘whoops’ are squared off 3 foot concrete holes that beat the heck out of you and the trucks.  We will do as much damage to the trucks in one day at Laughlin as we do an entire Baja 1000,” remarked Rob MacCachren.  “There’s no doubt the team can get the trucks torn down and re-prepped Saturday night and ready for Sunday’s race.  We really have a great crew.”

crew

Previous year’s attrition rates amongst the state-of-the-art SCORE Trophy Trucks are a testament to this course’s hostile terrain.  With just 17 of 32 competitors in the elite unlimited truck class finishing in 2011, it is anyone’s guess which drivers and teams will remain victorious when the checkers drop on Sunday’s race.  As a seven-time class champion at the Laughlin Desert Challenge, Rob MacCachren’s previous Trophy Truck victory at this event was at the second running of the race in 1996.  One thing is for sure, expectations for the MasterCraft Racing / Rockstar Energy Drink / BFGoodrich Tires team are running high as crew and drivers look to dominate the first two races of the SCORE International season.

Not only will it be a busy year for the MasterCraft Racing team, it will also be double the work for the drivers. In addition to campaigning trucks in the SCORE International series, both Rob MacCachren and Robbie Pierce will also be competing in separate team efforts in this year’s Best in the Desert Parker 425 on February 3rd – 5th.  Pierce will be getting behind the wheel and driving the final 142 mile lap of the of the No. 42 MasterCraft Safety / BFGoodrich Tires Trick Truck of Will J. Staats while Rob MacCachren will be campaigning the No. 6 Trick Truck with Steve Sourapas who, with Rick Geiser, finished fourth in last year’s Parker race.

“The plan this year is for Staats and me to compete in the entire Best in the Desert season in his No. 42 Trick Truck and I believe Rob will also be doing the same thing with Steve Sourapas in the No. 6 all of 2012,” said Pierce.  “I love racing in the desert so I will take all the wheel time I can get but with the acquisition of Impact and running two full desert racing schedules, I will have to park the Pro2 truck for this year.  If my schedule allows I am still considering Crandon though.  It’s the Baja 1000 of short course off-road and it is definitely on my bucket list.”

About Robbie Pierce:

Pierce is the owner and CEO of MasterCraft Safety and Impact; companies that provide life-saving race and military products through real-world and laboratory testing.  Pierce purchased a ProTruck in 2005 and his first race as driver-of-record was the 2005 BITD Vegas to Reno race.  Proving to be a quick study, Robbie finished second in class in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500. After a mere three races in ProTruck Pierce moved up to the marquee Trophy Truck class, a completely unlimited class considered the pinnacle of off-road racing.  His first race in his current No. 30 Jimco Trophy Truck was the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in 2008, where he finished 5th overall.  His best finish to date is second place at the Terrible’s SCORE Primm 300 in 2010, just a mere three weeks after a horrific race crash that left him with two broken collarbones and broken ribs.  Robbie finished sixth in SCORE Trophy Truck season points in 2009 and fourth in SCORE Trophy Truck season points in 2010.  The 2010 season is also the year that Pierce received SCORE’s distinguished honor of “Person of the Year.”

About Rob MacCachren:
Rob MacCachren possesses a rare combination of talent that ranks him among the elite of off-road racing, regardless of the venue.  His 25-year racing career includes an unmatched 189 race victories and 20 series championships in both short course and open desert racing, which also earned him a spot in the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2011.  Amongst those victories are 5 SCORE Baja 500 wins and 5 SCORE Baja 1000 victories in the desert, the crown jewel of which was MacCachren’s domination at the 1296 mile run down the Mexican peninsula at the 2007 SCORE Baja 1000.  Good things come in threes for MacCachren in short course racing, as the talented driver has won three consecutive series championships, three consecutive Borg Warner Cup races, three Governor’s Cups, and been named to the Auto Racing Writers & Broadcasters Association Auto Racing All-America First Team three times in his career.

MasterCraft Racing / Rockstar Energy Drink Overcomes Adversity At 2010 Tecate SCORE Baja 500

Monday, June 7th, 2010

By all accounts, the MasterCraft Racing / Rockstar Energy Drink team was going to be a force to be reckoned with at the 2010 Tecate SCORE Baja 500. With three SCORE Trophy Trucks starting in the top ten and incredibly strong finishes at the MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, expectations were justifiably high. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. “That is why we race,” explained a sage Robbie Pierce, CEO of MasterCraft Safety. “If we already knew who was going to take home the victory, it wouldn’t be very exciting. The unforgiving and challenging Baja peninsula always has a way of keeping things interesting, and that is one of the biggest appeals of desert racing.”

MasterCraft Safety / Rockstar Energy Drink No. 30 – Robbie Pierce

Pierce started the race in the third position and was running second in his Jimco SCORE Trophy Truck until he lost a power steering belt at Race Mile 22. “This is the second race in a row where this same issue has surfaced,” Pierce noted. “We need to go back to the drawing board and ensure this does not happen again.” With a new belt on the truck, Pierce fought his way forward and back into the eighth position with the help of “Turbo Tom” Geviss. Unfortunately an encounter with a cholla cactus forced Geviss to exit the truck at Race Mile 187, requiring Pierce to finish the second half of the race sans co-driver. Even after losing Geviss in the right seat, Robbie successfully worked his way up through the field and into the fifth position when the No. 30 pitted at race mile 290, taking on nearly 70 gallons of fuel during the stop. “Unfortunately a throttle position sensor failure caused the race truck to run excessively rich and our fuel economy went straight to Hell,” commented Robbie. “We had more than enough fuel to complete the last 150 miles of the race but I ran out just 8 miles from the finish while I was running in the fifth position,” added Pierce. Robbie eventually finished 16th, impressive considering the challenges he had to overcome during the race. While it was not funny at the time, Geviss was able to joke about the cholla incident after the race. “I am going to have to get MasterCraft Safety to make me another racesuit… one that is cactus proof!”

Rockstar Energy Drink / MasterCraft Safety No. 20 – Rob MacCachren

Starting the race in the second position it was not long before multiple series champion and off-road powerhouse, Rob MacCachren, was leading the crowded field in his Rockstar Energy Drink / MasterCraft Racing Jimco SCORE Trophy Truck. Sitting fourth in season points and a contender for the prestigious Milestone Award, Rob MacCachren and MasterCraft Racing was well positioned for a excellent race and season. Unfortunately, disaster struck at Race Mile 185 requiring a transmission change in MacCachren’s No. 20 truck. “I was sitting in the middle of the tremendously hot desert, waiting for the chase truck to bring us a transmission when Robbie’s co-driver, Tom Geviss, just popped up out of nowhere! He was pouring sweat, looked like Hell, and was in excessive pain when he got to us. I didn’t know Robbie had kicked him out of the truck two miles after passing us. Tom was in too much pain from the cholla to continue on in the truck so he walked back two miles to help us with the transmission,” remarked MacCachren. By the time the transmission was replaced all hopes of victory had been dashed, but MacCachren was able to finish the race, under his own power, just after midnight with an elapsed time of 14 hours, 5 minutes and 3 seconds.

MasterCraft Safety / Rockstar Energy Drink No. 42 – Will J. Staats

Will J. Staats started the race in the ninth position in the No. 42 MasterCraft Safety SCORE Trophy Truck and battled a tough field to earn a hard-fought sixth place position by the time he had reached the pit at race mile 290. Staats was running a phenomenal and nearly flawless race in his Jimco-built SCORE Trophy Truck until race mile 378 where he lost the brakes in a fairly technical section of the race course. The loss of stopping power caused Staats to hit a boulder on the course, destroying the driver side lower A arm in the process. “It was incredibly disappointing to be taken out of the race, that close to the finish and running in the sixth position but sometimes your luck just runs out,” remarked Will J. Staats. My co-driver, Greg Shapiro, was able to get the A-arm rigged back together with a ratchet strap and a chisel and we were able to limp the truck 12 miles out to the road crossing at Uruapan where our crew was waiting for us to put the truck on a trailer,” added Staats.

Look for the MasterCraft Racing Team to return to their winning ways at the 15th annual SCORE Terrible’s Primm 300 on September 10-12, 2010.

Tom Geviss Joins MasterCraft Racing As Co-Driver For SCORE Desert Races

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

As the 2010 SCORE International desert racing series unfolds, MasterCraft Racing continues to solidify their position at the front of the premier SCORE Trophy Truck class. First, MasterCraft Racing put desert and short-course off-road racing legend, Rob MacCachren, in a Rockstar Energy-sponsored Jimco truck for the entire 2010 season. Then, for the second and notoriously roughest desert competition of the SCORE series, MasterCraft Racing managed to put all three of their Jimco trucks in the top ten of the crowded SCORE Trophy Truck class during the San Felipe 250. Now, MasterCraft Racing has once again “uped the ante” by securing “Turbo Tom” Geviss as the co-driver of the No. 30 SCORE Trophy Truck campaigned by driver of record and MasterCraft Safety CEO, Robbie Pierce.

“I don’t think I could find a more experienced co-driver on Earth,” Pierce commented. “Tom has done it all. Whether it is desert racing, rock-crawling or navigating through Dakar, Tom epitomizes the ideal co-driver I want sitting in my right seat. His level of experience undoubtedly elevates our sport and my team,” added Pierce. During his 30 years of racing in both the driver’s and passenger’s seats, Geviss has accumulated five Baja 1000 victories and numerous class and series championships as well. Tom was also named the driver of record for the Man race support vehicle for Robby Gordon’s 2009 Dakar program in the H3 Hummer. Navigating the treacherous and diverse South American terrain in the Man race support vehicle has added an incredible level of experience to Geviss’ already impressive resume. “I am confident that Robbie and I can add a few more trophies to the mantle,” said a smiling Geviss. Pierce joins a who’s-who list of talent that has teamed with “Turbo Tom”, including off-road royalty such as Larry Ragland, Jon Nelson, Robbie Gordon, NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson, John Marking, and most recently, Jesse James.

Geviss’s new home will be in the No. 30 Jimco-built SCORE Trophy Truck outfitted with MasterCraft Safety 3G suspension seats and complimented by MasterCraft Safety five-point restraints and SFI-approved 3.2A/5 MasterCraft Safety race suit. MasterCraft Safety’s full-line of performance seating offers both comfort and protection in high “G” load situations and provides an 84% reduction of energy in a 50 G load impact. Rob MacCachren Teams With Rockstar Energy and MasterCraft Safety For 2010 SCORE International Season

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

With a career filled with 167 event victories and 19 series championships piloting everything from limited class buggies and stock Ford pickups to Trophy Trucks and the Pro 2 Unlimited trucks, Rob MacCachren is able to pick and choose exactly who he works with. In a tough economy where every racer is fighting for sponsorship dollars, it is an enviable position to say the least. So who exactly does the off-road racing legend choose to endorse? “The choice to align myself with MasterCraft Safety and Rockstar Energy was an easy one,” explains the multiple Baja 1000 and Borg Warner Cup champion. “These companies share my commitment to winning, regardless of whether the venue is desert or short course racing.”

To that end, MacCachren will be piloting the No. 20 Rockstar Energy/MasterCraft Safety Trophy Truck for the entire 2010 SCORE International season, adding to a busy schedule that also includes the Lucas Oil Off Road Series races. MacCachren’s all black Jimco-built Rockstar Energy/MasterCraft Safety Trophy Truck will be 21st off the starting line in the upcoming San Felipe 250, while teammate, Robbie Pierce will be the fourth Trophy Truck to leave the line in his own No. 30 Jimco-built MasterCraft Safety/Rockstar Energy Trophy Truck. MacCachren finished seventh at the first SCORE event of the season in Laughlin, Nevada, where only 28% of the premiere Trophy Trucks completed the course. “Jimco builds such a fast and reliable machine, and now that Rockstar Energy and MasterCraft Safety are providing me a chance to campaign my own truck for the entire SCORE desert racing season, I think that we are a real threat for the season points championship,” MacCachren stated following the race.

“As our product line expands, it is only natural that our race team grows as well” explained MasterCraft Safety CEO, Robbie Pierce. MasterCraft’s latest products include a full-line of performance driving suits, fuel and pit crew fire suits, neck braces, helmet skirts, and elbow and kneepads for pit crew safety and comfort. Available in either SFI 3.2A/1 or SFI 3.2A/5, Mastercraft Safety’s performance driving suits meet and exceed all stated SFI fire protection requirements while providing a comfortable fit and design. Optional hidden-pockets and sewn-in elbow and kneepads make this the first race suit specifically tailored to the unique environmental conditions of desert racing. Their most popular race suit, not coincidently, is the Signature edition, which is the suit of choice for SCORE Champions like Rob MacCachren and BJ Baldwin. More information on MasterCraft Safety’s full-line of products can be found by visiting www.mastercraftsafety.com.
